Aloki Care Home – Ms. Jeni Thapa

Website: https://alokicarehome.com/

Aloki Care Home was the first care home I was able to visit in Nepal. I had the opportunity to connect with Ms. Jeni Thapa via LinkedIn and Ageing Nepal. During my time with them, I better understood how stigmatized care homes are currently in Nepal.

I’ve appreciated my time in the Day Center and learning more about the work that is going on there. I’ve enjoyed being able to participate in activities and knowing the importance of knowing that a language barrier does not end our ability to smile, hold hands, but most of all, create memories. I’ve appreciated being able to dance with the seniors, sing, cry, hug, and most of all be. Nepal is the first country I’ve visited where people are merely able to be. You all also normalized ensuring our care staff is like family and ensuring both the professional and personable side of the work.

The work being done is admirable as they are working under challenging circumstances trying to break down cultural and societal barriers that still exist across Nepal. The main challenge is normalizing these concepts of care homes in Nepal.
